ATV Tires- Make Sure You Have The Right Ones

An ATV or all-terrain vehicle is also known as a quad, or quad bike. It looks like a motorcycle but with four or sometimes three or six wheels. As the name suggests, it is intended to be used on a variety of challenging off-road terrains, and in fact cannot be used legally on a public road in many countries. Most people buy them to use for enjoyment, but they can also be used for work purposes for instance, they are very useful for farming. All ATVs use low pressure tires, but exactly which type of atv tires you use depends on where you are planning to take the vehicle.

When an ATV is first purchased, it usually comes with stock tires or general purpose tires, sometimes called trail tires. These are sturdy enough to be used for general off-road purposes. All atv tires have reinforced steel rims and an extra deep tire tread, providing a much firmer grip on any surface than would be found on a normal vehicle. However, sooner or later you know you are going to have to replace the tires. If you find you are particularly interested in using the vehicle on a specific type of terrain, you need to select the type of tire that is designed for that terrain. The more suited your tires are for the terrain you are using, the longer they will last, and the safer you will be, for instance in terms of braking power.

There are other things you need to be clear about before selecting your new atv tires. One thing you need to decide is what is the most important thing you want from the vehicle. Your priority may be speed, or comfort, or you may be most interested in easy handling and maneuverability. Different tires are designed with different priorities in view. In addition, you may be interested in looking very fashionable and impressing other users, or you may only be concerned that the tires do their job. Finally, be sure you know what size your wheels are. You need to measure both front and back wheels, as on some ATVs the rear wheels are wider than the front ones for extra maneuverability.

There are many different types of atv tires from which to choose, depending on where you will be taking the vehicle. If you live near a desert or a beach, and are likely to be driving on sand, you will want to choose sand tires or paddle tire-s. These are very distinctive-looking tires, characterized by paddles spaced on the treads, which give the wheels traction by grabbing the loose sand. Some people prefer to use sand tires only on the rear wheels, keeping the stock tires on the front.

Another popular type of tire on ATVs is the mud tire. Mud tires are much lighter in weight, and have large gaps and irregular tread spacing, to give them the maximum grip in mud. They are also self cleaning, that is they spin as much as possible to shake the mud from the wheel. You can also find snow tires, which have horizontal treads wrapped round them like snow chains, and sport tires, which are the most expensive, which you would use if you were interested in racing.

If you have atv tires for one particular type of terrain, it is important not to use them on a different type. This will not only ruin your tires very quickly, but also compromise your safety. For an ATV, the tires are the most important part of the vehicle. If you have the right ones, you can relax and enjoy this exciting and exhilarating pastime in perfect safety.
